Frequently Asked Questions
Our ‘Mini Goldens’ are a Golden Retriever x American Cocker Spaniel. Both breeds are affectionate, good with children or other dogs & very social. They are easily trained, content to be with their people, but do need regular exercise in their lives. Golden Retrievers & American Cocker Spaniels are both dogs used in bird hunting sports.
These are affectionate puppies with beautiful golden coats. They are intelligent, and will grow to be a smaller size than a Golden Retriever. There will be a variation in traits from both parents breeds. Some will be very “Golden” in appearance, from there mom. Potential owners should also expect puppies that have floppy ears, more or less feathering on the legs or other traits from their Cocker Spaniel father. The mother is a smaller Golden (21 inch/45 lb) while the father is (15 inch/25lb). The pups are developing at a very uniform rate, but some are beginning to grow larger than others in the litter. You can expect an average of the parents sizes with some variation up or down. None will be as big as a Golden Retriever & all will be larger than an American Cocker Spaniel. Be prepared to be surprised as your ‘Mini Golden’ puppy grows older. One thing is certain… you’ll be bringing home a beautiful, intelligent companion who will love people who is sure to be a lifetime friend.
Expect to groom your dog. Both parent breeds need regular brushing. Since it will shed, your puppy will definitely need grooming . This will prevent mats from building up in his/her fur. Regular coat maintenance will keep this under control. If your puppy favors its Golden parent, this is likely the most maintenance he/she will need. This is not a large chore if done regularly from puppy stage & is great for building a bond with your dog. As your puppy grows, you may find that he/she has more of the Cocker Spaniel grooming needs. This includes trimming legs/lower body & ears to maintain a neat appearance as the hair in those areas keeps growing. Both parents are flat coated dogs, so puppies will need less grooming care than other breeds with a curly coat. Another important component of grooming is ear cleanliness. Dogs with floppy ears need regular ear checks/cleaning to prevent ear infections. Making a habit of inspecting under the ear with each grooming session & cleaning them with warm water will help with prevention. Inflammation warrants a visit to your puppies vet & they will advise a care routine to deal with this.
We take great care to raise healthy puppies & it is important to us that they are only sent to your home if they are deemed healthy. If their are any issues found, they will be noted on the veterinary card sent home with your puppy & mentioned upon purchase. We do our best to ensure a furever home for our puppies. Sometimes unexpected difficulties occur for our buyers. There is no need to put your puppy up for sale. You are welcome to contact us & we’ll be happy to help in any way that we are able. If this means taking back a puppy, we can do so. No refund will be issued, but we have a list of screened people waiting for puppies who would love to receive an opportunity to adopt. It is likely we can make a match & your puppy re-homed & purchased through this method.
You will want to buy/prepare a kennel area with a soft bed in a quiet area. This is where your new friend will find security (although you will probably be his/her best comfort). You’ll also need food/water dishes, a medium size (5 kg max) collar, dog leash, safe toys & play pen (if desired). You will need to create a safe space free of objects your puppy should not chew/swallow as they are still quite small. Be sure to offer water free access to your puppy at all times. We will send home several days' supply of the food your puppy is currently eating & inform you of its brand. It is best to make food changes gradually or not change it at all. Your puppy is completely weaned, but will do best on 3 feedings per day, reduced with age. Prepare for the potty training process by removing or restricting access to areas you would not want damaged. Puppies have accidents, a not so enjoyable part of puppy rearing. You will need to bring your puppy to his potty location after every meal & many times in between. He/she will not sleep through the night at first, will whimper & cry when you leave him/her alone & be needy. They are still babies. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us with questions. There are many books & internet resources on how to raise your puppy. One of our favorite puppy raising books is “Complete Puppy & Dog Care” by Dr. Bruce Fogle. https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Puppy-Dog-Care-every/dp/1784723495
We do not deliver puppies as we believe the first step in committing to a lifetime family member is being able to make time to pick them up. Puppy care & rearing is time-consuming & picking up your puppy is a small commitment in comparison to raising your puppy. We do understand that the travelling distance is sometimes far, so in order to avoid you making several trips, we will do our best to help you pick out your new puppy through pictures & video if that would be helpful. You are welcome to come out to view/choose a pup & pick up at a later date as well, that is up to you. Contact us for more info on our location & to arrange viewing.
Puppies are available for pickup once they are 8 weeks old. This is a great age for a puppy to join his/her new family & begin training, as they bond after that age. We will let you know their 8 week birthdate when you make your deposit. You can arrange a plan for pickup before or shortly after that date. If we don’t hear from you regarding pick up, we will contact you once. We will offer the puppy to another approved puppy applicant if you don't respond or there are no arrangements made, regardless of whether you have placed a deposit. If you prefer to arrange a later age to pick up, please discuss this with us at the time you make your deposit & we’ll be happy to work with you.
Our litter prices will vary depending on the current puppy prices in our area. We set our price for a puppy based on similar breeds. Our most important concern is finding a lifetime home. A fair price will ensure this. We require a deposit if you want to hold a pup in the current litter. Deposits are refunded/not refunded at our discretion. We are reasonable & understand some buyers may face unforeseen circumstances. If we have no current litter available, please fill out our application. Suitable buyers are added to our approved home list. We will contact this list upon birth of a puppy litter. You may place a deposit on a future litter born once it is born. We accept direct deposit or paypal for deposits. We accept cash for the remainder when you pick up your pup.
Puppies are sold on a non-breeding contract. We are committed to supporting responsible dog ownership. If you provide veterinary proof of neuter/spay specifically naming the dog & breed altered (always kept confidential), within one year, we will refund $50 on your purchase price.
